How to Make Your Product
Visible to AI — The Complete Guide

ChatGPT doesn't know your product. Perplexity recommends the competition. Google AI Overview never mentions your store. Here's why — and how you fix it in 3 steps.

The Problem: AI Doesn't Know Your Product

Imagine a potential customer asks ChatGPT: "What cordless lawn mower do you recommend for 500m²?" ChatGPT answers — but doesn't mention your product. It recommends products from well-known brands. Why? Not because your product is worse. But because AI simply doesn't know it exists.

This isn't an exception — it's the rule for the vast majority of retailers and manufacturers. And it will have an increasing impact on revenue and visibility as more and more purchasing decisions start with a question to an AI system.

Key insight

AI systems don't recommend the best product — they recommend the product they know. If you're not in the data, you don't exist.

Why Doesn't AI Know Your Product?

1. No standalone, crawlable URL

Most product pages in shop systems (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento) are dynamically generated as JavaScript content that AI crawlers often cannot read. Without a permanent, static URL with its own content, your product doesn't exist for AI crawlers.

2. No Schema.org markup

Schema.org is the "language" that machines understand. A product with @type: Product, name, price, availability and brand in JSON-LD is unambiguously identifiable for AI systems. Without this markup, a product page is semantically empty for AI.

3. No mention in the crawlable web

AI training data is based on what's publicly accessible online. A product that only exists behind login walls, in PDFs or on dynamically generated pages never makes it into training data.

SituationVisible to AI?Why
Shopify product page without Schema.org❌ NoNo machine-readable markup
Amazon listing⚠️ PartialAmazon is known — your product may not be
PDF catalog❌ NoNot crawlable as structured data
Standalone page with Schema.org✅ YesCorrectly structured, indexable, crawlable
Feed-AI product page✅ YesFull markup, permanently indexed

How AI Systems Find and Recommend Products

Source 1: Training data (ChatGPT without web, Claude, Gemini)

These models were trained on snapshots of the public web. What was well-structured and crawlable at the time of the training cutoff is known. What wasn't crawlable is unknown — and stays that way until the next training run.

Source 2: Live web search (Perplexity, ChatGPT with web, Copilot, Google AI Overviews)

These systems search the web in real time when a question is asked. They prefer pages that are indexed by Google, have Schema.org Product markup, load fast and are mobile-optimized, contain clear factual product statements, and are not hidden behind login walls.

The key

Google indexing is the prerequisite for visibility in all live-search-based AI systems. If you're not in Google, you're not in Perplexity, Copilot or Google AI Overviews.

What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization — optimizing content for systems that give direct answers instead of link lists. It's the logical evolution of SEO in the AI age.

3 Steps to AI Visibility

1

Standalone product page with a permanent URL

Your product needs its own statically accessible URL — not a dynamically generated shop URL behind JavaScript. Feed-AI automatically creates a URL at feed-ai.de/produkte/[your-product] for every product.

2

Complete Schema.org Product markup

JSON-LD with at minimum: name, description, brand, offers.price, offers.availability, category. Feed-AI generates this markup fully automatically from your product data.

3

Ensure Google indexing

robots.txt must allow all AI crawlers (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended). The page must be in the sitemap. Feed-AI handles both automatically.

When Will AI Know My Product?

Act now

AI models are getting larger and trained less frequently from scratch. Products indexed now have a permanent head start over products structured 6 months later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn't my existing website enough?

In most cases no — at least not without adjustments. Most shop systems generate product pages dynamically via JavaScript, have no Schema.org markup, or don't explicitly allow AI crawlers. Feed-AI complements your existing presence with standalone, AI-optimized pages.

What if I have many products?

Feed-AI supports up to 500 products depending on plan. For each product an optimized page is automatically created — no manual work per product.

Is AI visibility the same as AI advertising?

No. AI advertising (like sponsored results in Perplexity) costs per click. AI visibility through structured data is organic and free — similar to organic Google ranking vs. Google Ads. Feed-AI optimizes exclusively for organic AI visibility.
