What is AI SEO?

AI SEO (also called AEO, Answer Engine Optimization) is the optimization of content for AI answer systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. The goal is not a Google ranking, but a direct mention in an AI answer to a product question.

In short

AI SEO is the art of making sure AI systems know your product, understand it and recommend it, independently of your Google ranking.

Why AI SEO matters now

In 2024 and 2025, user behavior in product research changed fundamentally. Instead of typing queries and comparing results, buyers ask AI assistants directly for product recommendations. ChatGPT, Perplexity and the Google AI Overview answer, without sending the user to a list of search results.

The buying decision now happens inside the AI conversation, no longer on the search results page. Whoever is not visible there loses reach, regardless of their Google ranking.

AI SEO vs. classic SEO

The two are not mutually exclusive. But whoever optimizes for Google alone is at a structural disadvantage in AI answers. More on this: AI SEO vs. classic SEO →

The 3 foundations of AI visibility

1

Structured data (Schema.org)

JSON-LD with @type: Product, name, brand, price, availability. AI systems read this data directly.

2

A crawlable, permanent URL

Static HTML per product. No JavaScript walls, no login gate. AI crawlers need a fixed, publicly reachable address.

3

Content precision

Factual, clear product descriptions without marketing phrases. AI processes FAQ structures particularly well.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO mean? +

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization, the optimization for AI answer systems rather than classic search engines. It is synonymous with AI SEO.

Is classic SEO no longer enough? +

For Google rankings, yes. But AI systems answer product questions directly, without search results, and whoever is missing there loses a growing channel.

What is the first step? +

Add Schema.org Product markup and explicitly allow AI crawlers in robots.txt. Feed-AI handles both automatically.
